Photo Collage Maker
Photo Collage Maker arranges up to nine photos into a grid, strip or feature layout entirely in your browser. Pick the layout, spacing, background and corner radius, watch a live preview, then export a full-resolution PNG or JPG — nothing is uploaded.

How does Photo Collage Maker work?
A collage is a packing problem with an aesthetic answer. The engine first computes a layout in abstract units — one photo is one unit square — so the geometry never depends on screen size or export resolution. That unit plan is then scaled so the canvas's long edge matches the export size you chose, which is why a 12-pixel gutter looks the same at 1080p and at 4K.
Cover-fit, not letterbox
Every photo is drawn cover-fit into its cell: it is scaled until it completely fills the cell and the overflow is cropped away, centred. A collage with letterboxed cells and uneven gaps reads as a contact sheet; cover-fit is what makes the cells feel like tiles. The crop is centred, so the middle of each photo — where the subject usually is — survives.
Why downscaling is done carefully
A 4000-pixel photo landing in a 500-pixel cell is scaled down eightfold, and a single drawImage call samples too few source pixels for that — the result aliases into moiré. The painter halves the image repeatedly until it is within a factor of two of the cell, averaging the discarded pixels in at each step, which is the same approach every serious image library uses.
Rounded corners without hairlines
Each cell is clipped to a rounded rectangle before its photo is drawn, and the photo is drawn one pixel oversized. Without that overlap, anti-aliasing at the clip edge can leave a faint hairline of background showing through — the kind of defect you only notice after exporting.
Aspect ratio is a final crop
Choosing 1:1 or 16:9 does not re-flow the layout; it centre-crops the finished collage to that shape. The layout you arranged is the layout you keep, just trimmed at the edges, which is predictable in a way that re-flowing never is.
Everything stays on your machine
Photos are decoded with createImageBitmap (which honours the EXIF orientation tag, so phone photos come out the right way up), composed on a canvas, and encoded with canvas.toBlob — all in this tab. Nothing is uploaded, and there are no premium templates or watermarks: every layout is free.

What options and edge cases does Photo Collage Maker support?
| Parameter | Type | Default | Behaviour & edge cases |
|---|---|---|---|
| Layout | 5 layouts | 2 × 2 grid | Grids pack photos into equal cells; strips make one row or column; the feature layout puts one hero photo across the top. |
| Spacing | 0 – 40 px | 12 px | The gutter between cells, measured at export resolution so it looks identical at every export size. |
| Background | colour | white | Painted behind and between cells. Pick a preset or any custom colour; it also fills any empty grid cells. |
| Corner radius | 0 – 80 px | 0 px | Rounds every cell's corners. Photos are drawn slightly oversized so no hairline of background shows at the edge. |
| Aspect ratio | 7 options | original | Centre-crops the finished collage to the shape — 1:1 for posts, 9:16 for stories, 16:9 for banners. |
| Export size | 1080 / 2048 / 4096 | 2048 | Long edge of the output in pixels. 2048 is plenty for screens; 4096 for print. |
| Format | PNG / JPG | PNG | PNG is lossless; JPG is smaller with a quality slider. Photos with no transparency are usually fine as high-quality JPG. |
Frequently asked questions
How many photos can I put in one collage?
Up to nine. Grids are computed to fit whatever you add — a 2×2 grid with three photos leaves the fourth cell as background, and a strip simply grows longer. If you drop more than nine, only the first nine are used.
Will my portrait photos come out sideways?
No. Photos are decoded with the EXIF orientation tag honoured, which is the metadata your phone writes when you hold it sideways. The single most common complaint about browser image tools is sideways portraits, and it is handled here before anything is drawn.
Does the collage reduce photo quality?
Each photo is resampled once, into its cell, with high-quality downscaling — repeated halving rather than a single jump, which avoids the shimmer (aliasing) a naive resize produces. Exporting as PNG is lossless from there; exporting as JPG adds one generation of JPEG compression, which is why the quality slider defaults to 0.92.
Can I reorder the photos?
Yes — drag the grip handle beside any file in the list to move it. Cells fill in file order, so the first file lands in the first cell (or the hero slot in the feature layout).
Are the photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding, layout, painting and encoding all happen in this tab with the browser's own image code. There is no server involved, no account, and no watermark — every layout is free.
What is the feature layout?
It gives the first photo a hero slot spanning the full width across the top, with the remaining photos in a two-column grid below — the classic arrangement for a trip highlight or a before/after with context. Put the photo you want emphasised first in the file list.
