EXIF Date Fixer

Fix wrong photo timestamps in your browser: set a new date and time, or shift every stamp by hours or days to correct for timezone travel. The EXIF block is rewritten without re-encoding the image, so pixels are untouched and every other tag is preserved. Nothing is uploaded.

Dates are read here, in this tab, from the files you chose. Nothing is uploaded, and the pixels are never re-encoded.

How does EXIF Date Fixer work?

EXIF dates live in a small TIFF block inside the file — usually a JPEG APP1 segment — as fixed-width text like "2026:07:14 18:22:09". The three photographic stamps are DateTimeOriginal (0x9003, when the shutter fired), DateTimeDigitized (0x9004) and DateTime (0x0132), plus an optional GPS date and timestamp.

When every target tag already exists, the new text overwrites the old bytes at the same offset. Nothing moves: no offsets change, the image data is never decoded, and every other tag — camera, lens, GPS coordinates, maker note — is preserved exactly.

When a tag is missing, a replacement directory is appended to the end of the TIFF block and the pointer to that directory is updated. The original bytes are never moved, so all other offsets stay valid. If the file has no EXIF block at all, a minimal one is created and inserted; the pixels are still untouched.

EXIF carries no time zone, so dates are treated as wall-clock time: a +3 hour shift adds three hours to the numbers as written. Sub-second tags are reset to zero when you set an absolute time, and kept when you shift.

What options and edge cases does EXIF Date Fixer support?

EXIF date fields this tool edits
ParameterTypeDefaultBehaviour & edge cases
DateTimeOriginal0x9003 · EXIFeditedWhen the shutter fired. The field most software shows as "date taken".
DateTimeDigitized0x9004 · EXIFeditedWhen the image was digitised — usually identical to DateTimeOriginal for digital cameras.
DateTime0x0132 · IFD0editedFile modification stamp. Some viewers sort by this field.
SubSecTime*0x9290–0x9292zeroed on setFractional seconds. Reset to 0 when you set an absolute time; kept when you shift.
GPSDateStamp0x001D · GPSedited if presentUTC date from the GPS receiver, "YYYY:MM:DD". Never created from scratch.
GPSTimeStamp0x0007 · GPSedited if presentUTC time as three rationals. Updated together with the GPS date.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and rewritten entirely in your browser tab. Nothing leaves your device — you can watch the Network panel while it works.

Does this recompress my photo or reduce quality?

No. Only the small EXIF metadata block is rewritten; the compressed image data is copied byte-for-byte, so quality is identical.

What if my photo has no EXIF date?

You can still set one: the tool adds the missing date tags (and creates a minimal EXIF block if the file has none). GPS timestamps are the exception — they are only edited when GPS data already exists.

Why would a photo have the wrong date?

Common causes: the camera clock was never set, daylight-saving changes, file transfers that rewrote timestamps, screenshots that inherit the capture time, and travelling across time zones with the camera still on home time.

Which formats are supported?

JPEG, TIFF, PNG and WebP — the formats that can carry EXIF. HEIC photos are not supported here because their metadata layout differs.

Will the fixed photo sort correctly in my gallery?

Galleries usually sort by DateTimeOriginal, which this tool updates. A few apps cache thumbnails or sort by file modification time of the copy — re-import the fixed file if the order looks stale.
